Eleanor Coxon, No, Marr, 47f, Newcastle. - [S661] Alan Morgan, A fine and private place: Jesmond Old cemetary (n.p.: Tyne Bridge Publishing, 2000)
Hereinafter cited as Book: extract. Re James Coxon & Co.
Coxon’s was a household name throughout the north of England over three generations as one of the largest drapery stores in Newcastle. The right hand photo above was taken in the 1920s just before financial difficulties during the depression forced the shop to close, costing 300 people their jobs. Coxon’s stood at the corner of Grey Street and Market Street. The picture clearly shows the dormitories built on top of the original Grainger building of the late 1830s to house staff from as far afield as Hartlepool and Barnard Castle. The cellar was the domain of the official ferret keeper employed to combat rats from the Turks Head Hotel, next door on Grey Street.
The business was established in 1830 by James Coxon, from Glanton, who with Thomas Richardson as partner, ran a drapery and haberdashers’ shop in Mosley Street until the move to Market Street in the 1840s. James died at Benton House in 1867 after living for many years at Burdon Place in
Brandling Village and was succeeded by his son Herbert. His son, another Herbert carried on the business until 1928.
There were many proposals for the Coxon site, including the ‘creation of a super cinema’, but it was Sunderland based Binns Ltd that moved in with a view to establishing themselves in Newcastle for the North East Coast exhibition of 1929. It is said that next door neighbours, Bainbridge, had considered Coxon’s selling price too expensive. - [S663] Census on 2/4/1871 at Newcastle.
