"Bebside Furance" was the local name for "Bedlington Ironworks. This entry is largly a copy of the information I have entered for the Ironworks.
As a child in the 1940's and 50's Bedlington Ironworks was long since closed. It was better known to locals as "The furnace". The remains were situated in the valley of the river Blyth at bridge over the river which linked Bebside Colliery in the South with Bedlington Station in the north. A few cottages in the valley bottom, reached from the South by "the hairpin bends" or the "furnace bank" from a few cottages at the top of the bank were the sole dwellings. Of prime importance to us as children was the cottage on the South bank of the river which led into "the halfpenny woods". On payment of a halfpenny (pre-decimalisation) you were given a ticket to permit walking in the woods. Needless to say there were lots of ways to avoid paying the toll! The road out of the valley to the North led to "Bedlington Bank Top" and terraces of houses lining the road towards Bedlington Station.
A search on the internet for "Bedlington Ironworks" will produce more information. Try http://www.pitwork.net/terrymcbedl.htm for a detailed history.
