James Brown

M, #227, b. circa 1823, d. before 13 August 1888
| Residence* | Cornside, England, , The Birthplace of James is something of a mystery. The best clue is the 1861 census which gives "Northumberland, Cornside". Other census mention just "Northumberland", or even in 1881 "Bedlington" which is obviously incorrect. In 1861 he was living in Leadgate, Co. Durham. with Hannah, born in Tanfield. Searches for "Cornside" are inconclusive, but there is mention of "Draft lease by (1) to (2) of sporting rights of Cornside (50a.) in the township of Lune from year to year". Other family histories on the internet reference Cornside. The best guess at the moment is that it is west of Shotley Bridge. This would place it over the River Derwent into Northumberland. Also this area is near enough the Leadgate, Lancaster Tanfield area in which we find James and Hannah in the mid 18th.century.1,2,3,4 |
| Occupation* | His worked as a Coal Miner (recorded on marriage cerificate of daughter Elizabeth).5 |
