He worked as a Coal miner. His Territorial enlistement papers show him working as a Miner with the Birtley Iron Company. His DLI papers show his employment before enlistment as a Miner. He also worked in the Royal Ordinanace Factory at Birtley. His marriage certificate with Betty Sykes ecords him as a Assistant Foreman in the factory.^8,9,10,11
Biographical Note: William was married three times. (1) to Georgina McMeiken, who died while he was POW in Germany in WW1. (2) to Frances Foster McMeiken, Georgina's sister and (3) to Elizabeth Sykes. NB. his brother Henry Proctor married a third McMeiken sister, Elizabeth, known to the Johnson family as "Aunt Lizzie"..

He enrolled for the Territorial Army for a period of 4 years.¹⁴
On the night of the Census of 2 April 1911 he was at Church Street (7), Birtley, England, .¹⁵
He enlisted in the Durham Light Infantry, 8th Battalian 16/9/1914 with a Regimental No. of 300462. Vera Johnson says he was a POW for 3 yrs 9 months. From the service records it appears that he was posted POW in France on 20/4/1915. He appears to have been freed by 27/1/1919, though it could have been as early as 20/11/1918. (One paper records " DLI, Depot, Posted Report POW 20/11/18. Another paper says he served in France for 1 week, and Germany 3 years 7 months. Another paper that he served in France for 3 years, 217 days). A "Statement of Disability", with a health check was signed on 31/1/1919. On release he appears have been allocated to the 5th. Res Battallion of the DLI with a Regimental No. 2847. His final discharge was 3/3/1919, tho' he appears to have been home at Birtley on 3/2/1919 fro the wedding of Martha McMeiken & Leonard Giben.^11,16
William Proctor and Frances Foster McMeiken was a witness to the marriage of Leonard Gibens and Martha Gilmour McMeiken at The Parish Church, Birtley, England, , on 3 February 1919. (Martha met Leonard during WW1 whilst he lived in Birtley. After her marriage she moved to Antwerp).¹⁷

His first children were born in the Lamesley/Wreckenton area. He appears to have moved to Lintz Colliery, on the outskirts of Burnopfield, during 1890 in time for William's birth. By 1901 the family were living at Birtley.^4,5,6
He is recorded as being a Miner (Censuses 1891, 1901 and son William's 1920 Marriage Certificate). He is a General Labourer (deceased) on William's 1942 Marr. Certificate.^7,8,5
