Note - Biographical*Agnes went to America where she worked in service in Michigan. She returned with a child Albert, probably by a member of the household where she had been working. It’s said he was the son of the owner though there is no proof of this. She subsequently married John Thomas in 1893 and they settled down in Lancaster, Co.Durham. Residence*He was born and lived at Whitehaven until his teens. By 1881 he had moved and lived as an unmarried boarder at West Herrington, Co. Durham. He married in 1886 to Eliza in South Shields, where he was for for the birth of Archibald, his first son. By 1887 he was living in Birtley. By 1899 he had moved to Gateshead and still there in 1901 for the birth of Martha and Frances. He appears to have moved after this back to Birtley where he died.1,2,3,4,5

Occupation*His occuption in 1851 is Agicultural labourer. After which he seems to have become a Carpenter, which took on various forms during his lifetime. He was a Carpenter on his son, Archibald's marriage record (1886). The census information records him as Ship Borer in 1861, Shipyard Labourer in 1871; Ships Carpenter in 1881.1,2,3,4 
Residence*Census records show that he was born in Stranraer, Scotland. By 1846, aged 19, he was living in Wigtown, Cumberland for the birth of Grace. By 1848 he is living in Carlise for the birth of Jane. And by 1850 he is in Whitehaven where he appears to have lived for the rest of his life. In his later years, after the death of Martha, he lived with his son, James.
