He was a Carpenter on his son, Archibald's marriage record (1886). The census information records him as Ship Borer in 1861, Shipyard Labourer in 1871; Ships Carpenter in 1881.^8,9,10,11
Census records show that he was born in Stranraer, Scotland. By 1846, aged 19, he was living in Wigtown, Cumberland for the birth of Grace. By 1848 he is living in Carlise for the birth of Jane. And by 1850 he is in Whitehaven where he appears to have lived for the rest of his life. In his later years, after the death of Martha, he lived with his son, James.
