He was said to have been a publican in Hartlepool and later as a bookmaker.⁶
Albert Richard McMeiken was also known as McMeiken Thomas. At some point in his life Albert adopted the surname "Thomas", which was passed on to some of his children.⁸
On the night of the Census of 31 March 1901 he was at John Street (21), Lanchester, England, .⁹
He fought in the First WW 1 in the trenches I understand for the Durham Light Infantry and he is reported as saying that he could have fought for the Americans if he'd wanted to. This was probably materially of little importance as he was quite badly injured by shrapnel and was sent home.⁶
