| Anecdote | My own memories of my Grandma was that of a caring person, if sometimes a bit odd. I well remember how she used to love her Brown Ale with Sunday Lunch. She used to bake the most wonderful bread in a oven off the fire in the Living Room. The smell of newly baked "fages" still haunts me. I remember the wonderful holidays we had in Newbiggin. 3 Cleveland Terrace was only a couple of hundred yards from the beach, and we used to get changed in the house, and taking towels and picnics down to the beach spend long days swimming, building sandcastles, exploring rock pools and if we were lucky a boat trip or a trip on the "suggie boats" (Swings). Sometimes there was as many as four families with up to seven adults and six children staying in a two bedroom terraced house. People trebled up in beds, slept in "shaky downs" on the bedroom floors, and always of course there was the "pottie" under the bed since there was no inside toilet. Nocturnal visits meant fishing it from under and using it in the darkness. The kitchen doubled up for a kitchen and bathroom (without toilet, which was across the yard). A board covered the bath when not in use and served as a table. I don't remember many bathtimes there. A very primitive gas cooker served for making meals not cooked on the open fire. There was an out-house accessible from the back door and giving into the yard. This provided the washing equipment - a large poss tub and a heavy old mangle. At least we had electric light!1 |
| Anecdote* | In some ways Mary Gordon, was thought to be strange person. None of her children were married from home. She does not appear to have gone to any of their weddings. In particular Ossy was said to dislike his mother intensely. Peggy recalls how on one occasion her mother threw a glass of beer at her when living in the Council School house. Peggy had to dry off before going back to school.2 |
