Birth*circa August 1795, Longframlington, England, , DOB estimated from Gravestone in Longframlington Churchyard. (Aged 32 yrs in 1828.) (There is evidence for a DOB of both Thomas Coxon and William Coxon in1796. Thomas has a baptism record and William a DOD and age on his gravestone. Strangely there seems to be no record of William's Baptism.William could have been born any time from Jan 1795 to Jan 1796 to have an age at death of 32yrs. If he was born in mid 1975, there would have been time for Thomas' birth in Oct 1796. Furthermore if his parents conceived soon after their marriage he would have been born after August 1795. I therefore place his DOB at around September1795)1,2

Note - Biographical*From Lois Saleeba: "This William was born in 1736 at Woollaw, Elsdon parish, became part of the eastward drift of labourers looking for work or a better standard of living, as did his brother George, and other Coxons in Redesdale. From what I can discern the Mathers were already millers at Brinkburn - and perhaps at Overgrass - when William presumably arrived and got work as a labourer. Susannah's parents were both dead, (leaving 4 preteen children) by the time of her marriage to William, so they must have been looked after by family at or near Brinkburn."1
Occupation*He was a Miller. (1798 - miller, Overgrass Mill, Swarland, owning 1 cart and 1 carthorse, in Survey of males between 15 and 60 not in military service - Whittingham Parish registers, Lois Saleeba).
Note - Research*There is an open question as to whether the link from William of Overgras to Anthony & Jane of Redesdale is valid. It calls for a 2 year error in DOD on gravestone, not unusual but not rock solid. Two of his sons were called William and George, the same names as possible fathers brothers. But if he was the son of Anthony then he has chosen not to call any of his sons after his father. For the time being I have chosen to assume the link is valid, until proven otherwise., Principal=Anthony Coxon2
Birth*20 April 1736, Woollaw, Elsdon, England, 3,4
Baptismafter 20 April 1736, Birdhope Craig Presbyterian Church, Rochester, England, , (No Baptism record has been found to date but an attestation is in the Elsdon Church records, implying Baptism had taken place)3
Marriage*21 July 1763, The Parish Church, Longframlington, England, , Principal=Susannah Mather5
Address1768, Overgrass Mill, Felton, England, , He seems to have moved to Overgrass at this time. According to gravestone lived there for 56 years. Lois Saleeba quotes Bob Green. "-1767 -1779 Living at Overgrass. -1798 Miller, Overgrass Mill, Swarland, owning 1 cart and 1 carthorse, in survey of males between 15 & 60 not in military service. - 1800 William Coxon of Overgrass Mill"6

Occupation*His occupation is that of farmer as listed in the index of census returns for the Felton District Felton & Swarland Local History Society, Vols 1-3, (covering 1841-1891). Info from Bob Green).1
Birth*August 1761, Edlingham, England, , (DOB estimated from Date Baptism).2
Baptism30 August 1761, The Presbyterian Church, Longframlington, England, 3
Marriage*5 November 1789, Bedlington, England, , (From Lois: Witnesses to William and Margaret are Henry Coxon & Isaac Coxon, father & brother to William), Principal=Margaret Hair4,5
Marriage*26 May 1795, Coldstream Bridge Toll House, Coldstream, England, , Research Note: There is a difference between researchers as to William's wife, Ann's identity. Bob Green's researches say she is Ann Allan. Adrienne Walkers researches say she is Ann Hedley, born c 1770 at Warkworth. I believe that Ann is correctly identified as Ann Allan for the following reasons:
1) The 1795 marriage record for William and Ann at Coldstream fit in with the possible death of Margaret Coxon (nee Hair) during or soon after the birth of William in 1794.
2) From the Coldstream registers William and Ann both come from Eglingham parish, within which is the hamlet of Brandon.
2) A marriage to Ann Hedley would have meant the later marrying at about 15yrs age.
3) The marriage date of 1791 with Ann Hedley is quite out of sync with Williams marriage to Margaret Hair., Principal=Ann Allan6,7
Census 1841*7 June 1841, Overgrass, Felton, England, , Member of Household=Ann Allan, Member of Household=Walter Coxon, Member of Household=Jane Coxon8

Occupation*He was a Blacksmith. (from Jane's burial record, 1802)2
Note - Research*The identification of Williams ancestors, and his place within the family tree is still a mater of speculation. However there is an IGI record for a William Coxon, of "Branton, Durham, Northumberland" !! This has to be the Branton near Powburn. It is dated about 1775. No parents given. We know that there were Coxons worshipping in the area at this time. In 1802 at he time of his daugter Jane's death he was a Blacksmith at Glanton)3
Birth*say 1770, (DOB estimated from DOM. William seems to have come down from the Powburn/Glanton area, posibly one of the Brandon Coxons. Son Ralph was born there)4
