John Coxon

M, #17, b. 23 February 1841, d. 20 April 1907
| Residence* | John was born at Stanton Mill, near Longhorsley. When just a few months old he moved with the family to Warkworth. After the death of his parents sometime after 1851 he moved to be with his maternal Uncles, Robert & George Coxon, at their farm at East Mason, near Ponteland. He was there in 1861, and whilst there met his future wife Mary E Bell who was working at the Vicarage, Dinnington. After his marriage he moved with Mary to Seaton Burn, and then to Dinnington, where the 1881 census shows them in the Grocers shop. Most of their children were born at Dinnington, but sometime around 1884 they moved to Newbiggin by the Sea. (Nancy Wilson thought it was for health reasons to be near the sea). He spent the rest of his life at Newbiggin. |
| Note - Biographical* | By the time of his parents death about 1851, of his siblings only Isaac and Ann were alive. Six of them appear to have died in infancy or childhood. Isaac died without marrying in 1872. Ann had married Joseph Scott, and they appear to have has only one child, Isaac. |
| Birth* | 23 February 1841, Stanton Mill, Longhorsley, England, 1,2 |
| Occupation* | He seems to have started life as a farm labourer. He is listed as a Miner on his son Robert & Mary's marriage certificate and in the 1901 census. |
| Census 1841 | 7 June 1841, Houndene Mill, Warkworth, England, , Member of Household=Henry Coxon3 |
| Census 1851 | 30 March 1851, Warkworth, England, , Head of Household=Henry Coxon4 |
| Census 1861 | 7 April 1861, South East Mason Farm, Dinnington, England, , Head of Household=Robert Coxon5 |
| Marriage* | 28 November 1870, The Parish Church, Dinnington, England, , (The census' show that John was living with his mother's brothers, Uncles Robert & George, at East Mason farm, Dinnington. At about the same time Mary was a servant at the Vicarage. They probably met up during village social life before getting married)., Principal=Mary Elizabeth Bell6 |
| Census 1871* | 2 April 1871, Seaton Burn, Weetslade, England, , (This is the first census after John & Mary's wedding in 1870. This cottage was probably their first married home. by the 1881 census they had moved to the Grocer's shop in Dinnington)., Wife=Mary Elizabeth Bell7,8 |
| Census 1881* | 3 April 1881, The Grocers Shop, Dinnington, England, , John and his wife Mary are listed as being at the grocer's shop, Dinnington, in 1881. At the same time John's occupation is given as as Agricultural Labouer. We might guess that Mary ran the shop, whilst John went out to work., Wife=Mary Elizabeth Bell, Daugh=Dorothy Simpson Coxon, Son=George Henry Coxon, Son=Robert Coxon, Son=George John Coxon, Son=Matthew Bell Coxon9 |
| Census 1891* | 3 April 1891, Jacksons Buildings, Newbiggin by the Sea, England, , Wife=Mary Elizabeth Bell, Son=George Henry Coxon, Daugh=Dorothy Simpson Coxon, Son=Robert Coxon, Son=George John Coxon, Son=Matthew Bell Coxon, Daugh=Annie Susan Coxon, Son=John Isaac Coxon, MotherInLaw=Dorothy Simpson10 |

| Death* | 20 April 1907, Ferndene House, Newbiggin by the Sea, England, , (The Coxon Family Bible gives the date of death as 20/4/1908 aged 65, but John is said to be deceased at the time of Robert & Mary's Marriage on 15/6/1907. It is possible that the date in Bible is wrong)12,13 |
